![]() ![]() A lot of what I consider to be cinematic music involves orchestra, or at least some strings, brass, percussion, and/or choir, but it may very well be purely electronic (or sound design) too. Epic action and drama is often hybrid orchestral music with prominent rock and/or electronic elements, as well as powerful percussion. For the most part this means action, adventure, fantasy, inspiring, emotional, romantic, dramatic, suspenseful, or mysterious music, as well as underscores and cinematic post-rock, ambient, or even synthwave. pop, rock, indie, folk, country, electronic (e.g., EDM, disco, techno), hip-hop, R&B, funk, jazz, swing, world music, new age, lounge, relaxation, classical, etc.Īny album without a type label* can thus be considered a melodic cinematic album, but not necessarily epic trailer music. NC (non-cinematic): non-orchestral advertising, promo, TV, news, documentary, cartoons, comedy, etc.P/SD (percussion/sound design): non-melodic percussive or horror music, sound design, drones.I'll admit that the classification is somewhat subjective, so I provide more details on my criteria below. Since I typically listen to all the albums of a library or a composer, not just the trailer music ones (you can't always tell from the album name or description), the albums in the catalog are annotated with their type. ![]() And while non-trailer-music production music is used in trailers and promos all the time, it's probably not what you would call "cinematic" music. Although the latter is still mostly instrumental music, it is not restricted to any particular genres or instruments, and ranges thus from jazz to EDM. Trailer music can be viewed as a subset of production music. While some libraries are entirely focused on trailer music (typically epic, dramatic, action-packed, or suspenseful, but also emotional, fantasy and mysterious music), many libraries offer a much broader spectrum of music for licensing - production music - intended not only for movie trailers, but also documentaries, cartoons, commercials, etc. ![]()
